According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), Myanmar is vulnerable to a wide range of natural disasters. While the country’s coastal regions are particularly exposed to cyclones, tropical storms and tsunamis, rainfall induced flooding, is a recurring phenomenon across the country. Additionally, the whole country is at risk from earthquakes, droughts and fires while the country’s mountainous regions are also exposed to landslide risks.
As a national telecoms operator, our infrastructure and customers are vulnerable to these natural disasters. Our primary objective is to ensure that our network is as disaster resilient as possible so it remains operational for relief workers, family and friends of the affected to communicate with the disaster stricken areas. If in the worst case the network is brought down by a natural disaster, our responsibility is to get the network up and running as soon as possible while ensuring the safety of our staff and suppliers. Our secondary objective as a responsible operator is to donate funds for food and non-food emergency relief for disaster affected people via our disaster relief partners and our own staff and suppliers in cases of major disasters affecting a significant portion of the population.
